The Real Connection

It’s 9:00 a.m. in a quiet San Antonio community whose streets are adorned with antique shops, art galleries, and historic residences. My day starts in search of a cup of joe, a haircut, and a friendly face… and there it is! Nestled in the middle of this upscale, unpretentious neighborhood is The Image Gallery Salon, which is perhaps one of San Antonio’s best-kept secrets. The salon resides in a small brick building that reflects the nostalgic warmth of the 1950’s, but once you walk through that red door, it’s all about progressive fashion concepts.

This experience begins with the smell of fresh brewed coffee followed by a friendly, “Nice to meet you!” “Hey, good to see you!” Old acquaintances, familiar faces are greeted with a hug. It is just like visiting close family and friends. The Quiroz family, who gathered their talents together seventeen years ago, owns the business. These three siblings (a brother and two sisters) all have their expertise in different specialized areas, but when it comes to the company vision, they are one single unit.

As I have had the opportunity to know all of the family members, I pondered how they could spend so much time together. It soon became evident that they thrive on each other’s energy. This team, amazingly, understands each other’s thoughts without having to communicate verbally. It was not just about having a stylist, but a complete staff!

Despite it’s casual ambience, the Image Gallery team is a group of highly trained professionals. Subtly displayed behind the checkout counter are hair competition trophies and medallions for both men’s and women’s haircutting. I soon learned that the I.G. team had won hair design competitions on the state, international, and world levels. Their portfolio of competition hair designs showed that preparing for these events is a grueling process that involves hair, clothing, and make up design. The Quiroz family has taken this process one step beyond any of their competitors by developing “The Genesis Theory.” This process transforms traditional haircutting into a three-dimensional hair art form. The Genesis Theory has its own jargon that requires an understanding of Non-Euclidean Geometry. My stylist informed me that this sophisticated technique is required training for every I.G. team member because of its’ every day use in the salon.

I also received a seven-point consultation, which was a detailed discussion about my needs, wants and comfort zones. During this consultation, I learned about my sagital planes, radial points, and root directions, while my stylist measured my head with a comb. The result is phenomenal. The blow-drying service was not the end of my appointment, however. It concluded with an explanation of the quality custom products that I needed for styling, cleansing, and conditioning. After such an incredible experience with my stylist, I was excited about the Quiroz Axiom Hair Care Products. These in-house specialty products are botanically enhanced. I assumed that a botanical fragrance would be too strong, but in reality, it is quite mild and pleasing. Since these products are exclusive to the Image Gallery, I simply had to make a purchase! I continue to go back for more.

At the end of my session, I felt confident, not only with the service, but also in myself. I felt the freedom to talk about who I am, and what I want for myself. The experience gave me a different perspective about the haircutting profession, small business, and family. Love and commitment can birth amazing ideas that change lives forever.

Finally, finding my place of refuge, at The Image Gallery, makes this salon my very own “chicken soup" for the hair.
